Little Man

August

Ray Wyatt

2021

There’s a little man who whispers in my ear
Telling me these awful things I don’t want to hear
No one else can see him, but I know he’s always there
That little man who whispers in my ear

He says that I am worthless and a fool
He tells me that I’m selfish and stubborn as a mule
He tugs upon my shoulders, just like a puppeteer
That little man who whispers in my ear

B1>He keeps me wide awake most every evening
Staring at the ceiling from my bed
Reprimanding me my habits and behavior
Stirring up the trouble in my head

He tells me I make terrible mistakes
He says I should step on the gas when I should hit the brakes.
If I need a helping hand he will disappear
That little man who whispers in my ear.

One day maybe I will find a way
To make him pack his dreadful bags and send him far away
Until then I’ll just settle for the heckles, taunts and jeers
From that little man who whispers in my ear.

B2>Silent nights are made for dogs and babies
Slumbering through hurricanes and quakes
Without the constant shame and condemnation
For all of their transgressions and mistakes

EVERY DAY IS CHRISTMAS Words and Music by David and Kelly Hanshaw ©2021

Chorus:
EVERY DAY IS CHRISTMAS WHEN I’M WITH YOU
MORNING SUN OF GOLD IN A SKY OF BLUE
ALL THAT I’VE ASKED FOR HAS COME TRUE
EVERY DAY IS CHRISTMAS WHEN I’M WITH YOU

DOESN’T HAVE TO BE A FIELD OF SNOW
EVERGREEN DRESSED IN LIGHTS THAT GLOW
RIBBON BOWS ON PAPER HOLDIN’ TOYS SO NEW
EVERYDAY IS CHRISTMAS WHEN I’M WITH YOU

WE DON’T NEED A SPRIG OF MISTLETOE
CAROLERS SINGING ALL THE SONGS THEY KNOW
A SILVER TRAY OF COOKIES SET OUT FOR YOU KNOW WHO
EVERYDAY IS CHRISTMAS WHEN I’M WITH YOU
Bridge:
CHRISTMAS COMES JUST ONE DAY A YEAR
I FEEL THE SPIRIT EVERY TIME YOU’RE NEAR

Weekend in Mexico

July

Paul Boedeker

2021

(V1)
With all the miracles of medicine
At our disposal today
it’s really not fair
any worldly care
should heavily weigh
So I called on my doctor
For a remedy
he scribbled a note
the prescription he wrote,
for my malady

(Chorus)
A weekend in Mexico
Maybe the Playa Del Sol
some sand in your toes
sun on your nose
find a new friend
Day after day
the same old grind
Bound to make a man
lose his mind
there isn’t a pill
cure this ill
like a weekend in Mexico

(V2)
So I did what he told me to
He’s the one been to doctor school
couple fifths of Patron
my very own
a room with a view
Sweet seniorita to hold my hand
What she’s saying I don’t understand
the smile on her face
illuminates
my weekend in Mexico

(Bridge)
I’ve forgotten my problems
Lost all of my blues
the name of this street
the day of the week
I haven’t a clue
Wait, this isn’t my wallet
Don’t recognize these clothes
a weekend in Mexico
anything goes!

(Chorus 2)
A weekend in Mexico
Doctor’s orders, I had to go
sand in my toes
sun on my nose
found me a friend
Day after day
the same old grind
Bound to make a man
lose his mind
there isn’t a pill
cure this ill
like a weekend in Mexico

(Epilogue)
I’m in a hot Mariachi band
my new address is a GMC van
a weekend in Mexico
I’m a brand new man!
Parade

Parade revised 6-23-21

I hit this world, with scream and a yell.
Gonna blaze a trail, change the world, you never can tell.
With those dreams, found a real fine wife. built the house, raised the kids, set for life.
Then drinking days, drove em all way , I’d had enough so I learned to live for just one day.
Yea I got knocked down, lower than I’d been, but I knew right then the time had come to sink or swim.
Now theyr’e back in my life, I pray to stay.
Ain’t no big thang, it was just a little rain on my parade.

Well I knew ole Joe, at the grocery store
He would sack the bags , clean the aisles, just as told
Then a man said hey, boy you eyeing my wife, he came for Joe to hurt him bad with a big ol knife.
Joe was all cut up, nothing he could do, all because he didn’t look much like me or you.
He knows it ain’t right , but hell he’s gonna try. It’s hard for some to see the world through his eyes.
Feels better than most, got it made in the shade.
Ain’t no big thang, it was just a little rain on his parade.

We make plans to lives our lives, most the time it goes just right, but some days you get knocked down and you want to cry.
Hard times are real it’s understood, so we have to find the good, the world has laid right out before our sleepy eyes.

Well they had a little bar, in the neighborhood
It wasn’t much , they made it work, we knew they would.
Then a big storm came, shut em down, not just them but every bar in this big ol town.
Then the sun came out. Was there ever a doubt. They looked up and smiled to God they were still around.

Now they’re doing alright, Better than OK. In fact compared to most they think they got it made.
It was a rocky time, man they were they afraid,
But no big thang , it was just a little rain on their parade.
No big thang , it was just a little rain on their parade.
No big thang, it was just a little rain on their parade.
Sinner's Tree

June

Andrew Fischer

2021

When I die, bury me
Underneath the sinner’s tree
Cover my bones so they can sleep
There for all eternity

For god’s sake, forget this sinner’s soul

Please don’t say no prayer for me
Underneath the sinner’s tree
And don’t carve no stone for all to see
Because I won’t ever rest in peace

For god’s sake, forget this sinner’s soul

I never meant to do you wrong
Yes, I swear upon this song
If I ever caused you pain
I promise it will never happen again

[Instrumental]

For god’s sake, for god’s sake…

When I die, bury me
Underneath the sinner’s tree
Cover my bones so they can sleep
There for all eternity
Things My Momma Saved

Things My Momma Saved © Ray Wyatt/ Paul Boedeker

There comes a time in every life when things come to an end
And they pack up your belongings and they pass them to a friend
Or maybe to your children if they haven’t misbehaved
Here are some of the many things that my Momma saved

A pair of wooden castanets, a sterling silver set
Never moved from the piano or graced a table yet
Pictures from vacation all bound up in a book
Hidden on a closet shelf without a second look

A bottle of French Champaign she kept under the sink
For just the right occasion that she never got to drink
A box of costume jewelry she treasured more that gold
That never saw the light of day, once she’s gotten old.

C>Among the ancient keepsakes, she kept close to her heart
Stacks of faded photographs with which she’d never part
Of all the precious treasures and sacred memories (Pause)
(Of all the dust and clutter that she had to stumble through)
The most important thing I think, my Momma saved was me (you)

A hundred pieces of Tupperware without their matching tops
A random set of jelly jars to measure out her shots
A million tangled hangers, and an Elvis TV tray
Little scraps of Christmas wrap too nice to throw away

B>Saved me from the clutches of the Harris County jail
Dragged me down to rehab when I stumbled for a spell
Handed me a Bible so my foolish eyes could see
My wasted, worthless life was still worth saving

So, one day you find yourself saddled with this chore
Consider it a blessing; nothing less and nothing more
With all the dust and clutter that you have to stumble through
The most important thing you’ll see your Momma saved was you.
GOODWILL SHOES

GOODWILL SHOES

intro (scat)

verse 1
I was standin’ on the corner with a cardboard sign,
Tryin’ just to find a helpin’ hand.
My shoes so full of holes, and the weather turnin’ cold,
My feet are like to freeze right where I stand.
Then a woman passed and handed me five dollars.
I said “Thank you and God bless” as she drove away.
Took these feet to the Goodwill Store. Now they won’t be cold no more.
Bought some new old shoes and had enough to pay!

chorus
Now look who’s wearin’ these Goodwill shoes.
We’ve both seen better days and paid our dues.
And I just can’t help but wonder whoooose they used to be.
Now it’s me who’s wearin’ these Goodwill shoes.
(scat)

verse 2
Maybe they belonged to someone rich and famous,
And that good luck will rub off on me. Who knows?
Maybe Mister Howard Hughes was the one who wore these shoes,
And tucked hundred dollar bills into the toes.
Maybe they belonged to a scientific genius
With his head in the clouds, my shoes upon his feet.
We might win the Nobel Prize, ’cuz his feet are just my size.
We could walk together down on Easy Street.

chorus
bridge
Maybe they belonged to a doctor or a lawyer,
Or the editor of a big city Tribune.
Maybe they were bought by a famous astronaut
To wear on feet that walked upon the moon.

WORDS AND MUSIC BY DAVID & KELLY HANSHAW ©2021

WE MARRIED YOUNG AND WE BUILT THIS HOUSE
OUR CHILDREN GREW NOW WE’RE ALONE
WE FOUGHT FOR LOVE WE WOULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT
HEARTS AGAINST THE WIND, STRUGGLE MADE US STRONG

FOR ONE MORE DAY OF QUIET CONVERSATION
ONE MORE DAY OF ROLLIN’ WITH THE FLOW
WITH EACH SUNRISE, A NEW BORN DEDICATION
WE EMBRACE ANTICIPATION OF ONE MORE DAY

20 YEARS WENT BY, WHEN DOCTORS CAME
WITH NEWS THAT ONE WOULD SOON BE GONE
TALKING ‘BOUT HOW LITTLE TIME REMAINS
DRAWING FROM THE WELL OF WILL TO CARRY ON

FOR ONE MORE DAY OF QUIET CONTEMPLATION
ONE MORE DAY OF LEARNING TO LET GO
WITH EACH SUNRISE, TWO HEARTS SLOWLY BREAKIN’
WE EMBRACE ANTICIPATION OF ONE MORE DAY

WORRYING ABOUT THE THINGS WE NEED TO DO
ALL I CAN THINK ABOUT IS YOU, AND

ONE MORE DAY OF QUIET CONVERSATION
ONE MORE DAY OF ROLLIN’ WITH THE FLOW
WITH EACH SUNRISE, A NEW BORN DEDICATION
WE EMBRACE ANTICIPATION OF ONE MORE DAY

The Girl with the Tattoo on Her Ankle

April

Ray Wyatt

2021

The Girl with the Tattoo on Her Ankle ©Raymond Wyatt

The girl with a tattoo on her ankle is waving at me from the door
I saw her blink when I gave her a wink I think maybe I met her before
She’s a dance floor beauty, good thing she’s not choosy
And I hope that she’s taken with me
But the girl with the tattoo on her ankle
Might not recognize what she sees

The girl with the Tattoo on her ankle is drinking a tonic and gin
I told her a whopper, but that didn’t stop her from flashing an unamused grin
I asked a question, I made a suggestion
She didn’t hesitate to say yes
So the girl with the tattoo on her ankle, Liked my offer I guess

C>Girls like this are so hard to resist
Now, I understand
The Girl with the tattoo on her ankle (She’ll always have ink on her ankle)
Is smiling and holding my hand (And she’ll always be holding my hand)

The girl with the tattoo on her ankle is dancing with me with a smile
She is so graceful her steps are so tasteful and my stumbling feet are so vile
She says I’m and keeper, a romantic sleeper
And exactly what she’s looking for
So, the girl with the tattoo on her ankle is waltzing with me to the door

B> Do you really think that a little blue ink of a mouse or a cute butterfly
Could stir up a feeling and keep me from stealing a peek at here pretty bare thigh?

So, if you have a tattoo on your ankle, or your back or your bottom or chin
Don’t let the fanatics with rocks in their attics tell you what to do with your skin
Because I have a lady who’s ankle is shady
Now I think you might understand
She’ll always have ink on her ankle and she’ll always be holding my hand
Guadalupe Afternoon

Guadalupe Afternoon ©Raymond A. Wyatt

Well, I’m floating down the river in an old pickup truck tire
My butt feels like an icicle; and my knees are on fire
I’m whistling past the willows to a Willie Nelson tune,
It’s a Guadalupe afternoon.

My head is under water; my feet are in the air
My butt is bumping the bottom, but then, I don’t really care
There must be a thousand people here, all howling at the moon
It’s a Guadalupe afternoon.

C> I’ve got so many responsibilities that I should be doing,
I’m almost ashamed of myself
My rum and Mexican Coke got wet and my camera is ruined
But I think I’ll stick around here for a spell

I see my sneakers drifting by; my hat is floating with them
And every Skynyrd song I hear has a sexy Latin rhythm
I think I lost my car keys and I better find them soon
It’s a Guadalupe afternoon

C>

I’m coming to the exit where I have to catch my bus
But I don’t think that they’re watching out for every one of us
I think that I’ll just drift on by; I don’t want to leave so soon
It’s a Guadalupe afternoon

Final draft of lyrics. Better recording. Special thanks to Ray Wyatt for recording expertise and the DZ singers for that rousing outro! Hope y'all enjoy!

Trouble

(verse)
blonde haired, blue eyed
second cousin’s friend
said she'd like to meet you
don’t want to offend
innocent enough
don’t you think?
motel bar
just one drink
it’s no trouble!
uh oh, trouble

(Chorus)
Trouble will find you
Flip, flop, or fly
Trouble will blind you
With the wink of an eye
Whenever you think you’re safe
Out on your own, remember
Beauty is skin deep
Trouble cuts to the bone

(verse)
six foot six gorilla
crashed in the door
doing the “deer in the headlight” dance
jeans on the floor
this is not
any fun
pardon me
I have to run!
looks like trouble!
uh oh, trouble
(chorus)
(bridge)
Trouble
Take me places
I don't wanna be
Trouble
Show me things
I don't wanna see
trouble you seek
trouble you will find
never far off
never far behind
you will reap
what you have sown, remember
beauty is skin deep,
trouble cuts to the bone

(outro)
trouble is as
trouble does
trouble finds you
just because
every day has
enough of it's own, remember
beauty is skin deep,
trouble cuts to the bone.
We Waited Too Long

We Waited Too long (revised)
By Jay Harris

Here we are, worlds apart.
Both of us longing for a brand new start.
Words fly, tempers flare.
Vows are broken, nobody cares.

How did it happen, when we tried so hard.
To be the best the world had seen.
Hand in hand, heart to heart, and it all was free.

We tried so hard, I guess we waited too long.
It's all but gone, I guess we waited too long.

I do the yard, you make a cake.
We both know deeds no longer cure the aches.
You long to stray, I long to drink.
Beyond concerned what anybody thinks.

We sought advice and help along the way.
Neither did much now I can see.
So here we are with lives as cold as cold can be.

We tried so hard, I guess we waited too long.
It's all but gone, I guess we waited too long.

Love's banner flew when we were hot. We raised it high for all the world.
Then that sweet love was soon forgot, and that war torn banner fell unfurled.

Heartfelts exchanged, through caring eyes.
And in that moment, nobody lies.
Both know we're done, is what it is.
Not too surprised to see it’s come to this.

It wasn’t me, I know it wasn’t you.
We each learned roles we had to play.
And how we changed was never seen, not day to day.

We tried so hard, I guess we waited too long.
It's all gone, we waited too long.
If These Hands Could Talk

February

If these hands could talk © Ray Wyatt

C>If these hands could talk, the stories they could tell
If these scars could only speak, they’d ring out like a bell
I’m reaching up to heaven, and I’m crying down in Hell
If these hands could talk, you would know me well

See this ugly crooked thumb; I got it from my wife
She caught me in the kitchen with a rusty carving knife
I begged her not to use it, but then you know what they say
Kids and angry women, never listen anyway

I was working in Alaska, digging there for gold
Gorgeous was her beauty, but then savage was her cold
I took too many chances with winter in her hills
Lost my little finger to the frostbite from her chills
C>
I got these busted knuckles in an angry barroom fight
I was passing through in Galveston when I stopped in for a bite
I admired a waitress who was much admired before
I lost a tooth and both my boots just running out the door

I was slinging chains and drill pipe on a rig out in the gulf
When a cable snapped and snagged my hand and damned near tore it off
They gave me ninety stitches, but not a drop of Novocain
I cried myself to sleep that night just dying from the pain

You see these ugly callouses, covering my palms
I got them picking cotton down there on that prison farm
I was only trying to help a friend get a bag to Santa Fe
The border man caught me and they hauled me away
C>
I headed back to Houston, I was trying to settle down
Where I met a timeless beauty on the better side of town
She swore to me she loved me, but sent me on my way
That’s the wound that hurts the most until my dying day

Do you see this ugly dark spot, back there of my hand
The doctor said its fatal, least that’s what I understand
Just give me back my last 10 years and let me try again
I promise I won’t waste it, just throw me to the wind

Thanks so much for feedback, everyone!
I made a few changes:
1. Cut out extraneous words.
2. Added back up choir in chorus.
3. Added synths in Verse 2 and cymbal swell in intro
4. Whispered part of line in V2
5. Added another strings for chorus/bridge (plucks)
6. Added harmony back up vocals for bridge.
7. Changed ending.

With more time, I'd tighten up the vocals... Thanks for listening!

Somethin’ tells me the path is long
Somethin’ tells me we choose our song
In a world of joy and hurt we gotta find our way
So havin’ somebody to see color in gray
Can bring a touch of hope and make the weather all good.
Solo’s hard to cope but I know together we could
Butterflies flutter far beating their two wings
Linking beauty’s better than a million diamond rings.
So you should know that…

Chorus:
I feel all the power of the universe.
I feel all the peace of a Holy nurse.
When you hold my hand.
When you just hold my…

Fathers, sons, mothers, daughters, husbands, wives.
Best friends, younger siblings, anyone alive.
Reachin’ out to tell them it’s all ok.
No words only meaning in this Milky Way.
Rollercoaster riding all the way through our life.
Arms go up to celebrate as well as face strife.
All alone we flounder in the raging dark sea.
Swimming close together takes away the mystery.
And I want you to know that…

Chorus:

Bridge:
Simple, so magical, so pure.
Your skin on mine makes me feel secure.
With just a little touch you give the world to me.
A superhero’s strength displayed gently.
So thank you because…

Every morning quarter past ten,
All the regular folks start stumbling in
To the Home Away From Home,
Honky-Tonk Tavern and Bar

You might meet Darla, she’s a single mom
Threw out her boyfriend his name is Tom
Said she’s done with men who cheat
But we all know he’ll be back next week

Dennis gets a paid to work on cars money
Spends too much time on a stool in this bar
What you don’t know is secretly,
He’s in love with Darla; and she with he

Chorus> Every morning at a quarter past ten, all the regular folks start stumbling in
The Adult Day Care, Paycheck Cashing, Psychotherapy, Bingo Parlor
Home Away From Home, and Honky-Tonk Tavern and Bar

Jimmy’s counting quarters behind the bar,
Gritting his teeth on a cheap cigar
Missed his chance twelve years ago,
To be in a motion picture with DiCaprio….

Bubba’s drinking gin with his girlfriend Jill
Tommy’s in the corner talking trash to Bill
Jukebox is playing some hot George Jones
And the Hildebrandt twins are staring at their phones

Chorus>

Bridge> There’s a bar like this on every block; each one’s open till 2:00
The outsides all have different names; if you go inside they all look the same
So if you want to visit us way down here; stumble on in; we’ll buy you a beer

My Love

Woke up this morning, and of course I thought of you.
Where would we go today? What would I hear you say?

Some great adventure, I could never find myself.
But you know where to go. Always higher, never low.

Chorus
My love, is your love, I hope it’s all you’ll ever need
My love, your love, I pray it’s all we’ll ever need.

What makes it happen, I guess no one understands.
Just what I do to you, just what you do to me.
No expectations, no judgements or demands
Just calm as we can be, just how it outta be.

You shine just like a million stars when I look into your eyes,
Filling every hole inside of me like waters from a tide.
Good times come so easy, like a sunset from a ridge
Seeing colors no one's ever seen from nothing that we did..

My love, is your love, I hope it’s all you’ll ever need
My love, your love, I pray it’s all we’ll ever need.

A Dreamer Of Dreams
This song I wrote from a SWRFA song (prompt)

All my life moving in circles
Forever on pace to restart
A roundabout circuit the only course I know
an automated journey I’m on

Always I see smiling faces
The cheerful enchanted abound
My role to deliver a gleeful guarantee
But there’s someplace that I’d rather be

Chorus
If I could break my reins and run
Find my place in the sun
Finally free what a life I’d lead
A dreamer of dreams like me

I long to let loose on the prairie
Drink from a cool mountain stream
Feel the salt breeze as I bolt down the beach
Why should that be out of reach

Chorus

I’m just a painted pony on this midway carousel
Yearning to grab that brass ring
Living my life on a Merry-go-round
A dreamer of dreams like me

If I could break my reins and run
Find my place in the sun
Finally free what a life I’d lead
A dreamer of dreams, a dreamer of dreams
A dreamer of dreams like me

Is that so much to ask
(So much for the horse)... to ask
