I Would Be Nothing

November

Andrew Fischer

2019

Heaven only knows
What the tides would be without the moon
Heaven only knows
What this song would be without the tune

Heaven only knows
How dark the night would be if not ablaze with stars
Heaven only knows
How dark my life would be if you broke my heart

I would be nothing without you babe

(Instrumental)

Heaven only knows
What the dusk would bring without the dawn
Heaven only knows
Where the soul would go with no beyond

I would be nothing without you babe

I_d be nothing at all
My sky would fall
Nothing at all
Heaven would fall

I would be nothing without you babe

Don_t you know that I would be nothing without you?

Beauty of it all
Written by Graeme Hall

Verse 1
It don't matter how hard I swim
Cause the wall of water just rushes in
And I quote
That ain't how I planned my life at all

Now I'm wide awake and I'm listening
And I'm finally focusing
But it's too late
I already lost my way

And the sun will rise and that's all I can say

Chorus
Cause we've come so far but it's gone so fast
And as life slips out of the hour glass
I've finally seen the writing on the wall
And it makes no sense and no difference
And if chasing dreams is how life's spent
It won't mean a thing when my maker comes to call
If I find I missed the beauty of it all

Verse 2
Lately I've been trying to find
A purpose-peace of mind
But it's all gone
My old life washed away
I've toiled at dreams with my bare hands
And wasted time on worthless plans
I had blind faith that things would be OK
That the sun would rise on a better day

Chorus
Cause we've come so far but it_s gone so fast
And as life slips out of the hour glass
I've finally seen the writing on the wall
And it makes no sense to be different
And if chasing dreams is how life's spend
It won't mean a thing when my maker comes to call
If I find I missed the beauty of it all

the beauty of it all
the beauty of it all
the beauty of it all
the beauty of it all

Chorus
Cause we've come so far but it_s gone so fast
And as life slips out of the hour glass
I've finally seen the writing on the wall
And it makes no sense and no difference
if chasing dreams is how life's spent
It won't mean a thing when my maker comes to call
If I find I missed the beauty of it all

the beauty of it all
the beauty of it all
the beauty of it all
the beauty of it all
Pull the Plug (If I Can\'t Go Outside and Play)

Pull the Plug (If I Can_t Go Outside and Play) by Geoff Simpson August 2019

[chorus:]
Outside and play _ if I can_t go outside and play.
Outside and play _ if I can_t go outside and play.

At seventy-nine, give or take, I feel fine, though my body has seen better days;
With my new ticker clicker, and the blood thinner thicker, I wonder how long I will stay.

I had surgery twice _ drilled my skull with a spike, making Frankenstein look like a kid
Plus a hip joint and ball meant the risk that a fall could deliver the end, God forbid.

[pre-chorus:]
But with so much to do, I said, I must insist: these setbacks will not slow me down.
If I can_t have my way and go outside and play, pull the plug. I_m not fooling around.

[chorus:]
Outside and play _ if I can_t go outside and play.
Outside and play _ if I can_t go outside and play.

Theater tickets and a trip to Cancun are the plans I_m intending to keep _
Having dinner with friends, buying paintings, and then hearing jazz at the place down the street.

My loved ones may miss me, so, now they should kiss me: Good_Bye may not be far away.
I_m hoping for twenty, but fewer plenty If I can_t go outside and play.

[pre-chorus:]
If I can_t have my way and the end of the day don_t keep me around for display.
Just do as I say_ pull the plug, don_t delay _ if I can_t go outside and play.

[chorus:]
Outside and play _ if I can_t go outside and play.
Outside and play _ if I can_t go outside and play.

[Bridge:]
A lot could be said about lying in bed, just keeping the reaper at bay.
But what is it worth filling space on this earth if I can_t go outside and play? ...

[chorus:]
Outside and play _ if I can_t go outside and play.
Outside and play _ if I can_t go outside and play.

Then a long weary winter went straight into summer. The temperature hit ninety_one.
I moved the lawn furniture out of my way and I set my self out in the sun.

By the irises bed in the garden I rested _ no breeze on that sweltering day _
til the brain in my head and my heart left me dead ... that_s the last time I went out to play.

[pre-chorus:]
If I can_t have my way and the end of the day, don_t keep me around for display.
Just do as I say _ pull the plug, don_t delay _ if I can_t go outside and play.

[chorus:]
Outside and play _ if I can_t go outside and play.
Outside and play _ if I can_t go outside and play.
Just do as I say _ pull the plug, don_t delay _ if I can_t go outside and play.

Come Along, Let's Play
By Dan DeHart

I hear your name is Jed and you’re here to stay
Well, my name is Joseph and I am here to play
So, stop that crying and screaming and sleeping all day
Get down off mama’s lap, come along let’s play

Verse 2
I got lots of toys here, more than I can say
At GeeGee and PawPaws I get more and more each day
We’ll run through the sprinkler and they will laugh and scream
Then back in the house, we can eat ice cream

Chorus

I got riding toys and slides, and a swing under the tree
I got balls to throw and books to read and Elmo’s on TV
Just take my hand and come with me, and you will see
So what do you say, won’t you play with me

Bridge
I got treasures and treats in special places
I’ll share them with you, if you stay in my good graces

Verse 3
I can give you tips, I know what you’re going through
Your big brother has your back, now that I am two
Together we will make them proud, just me and you
I can’t wait till you grow up, so I can play with you

Repeat Chorus and end.

An angel in white
An angel in white
Her long dark hair in a braid

To the temple she ran
To the temple she ran
The place where she feels unafraid

Caroline, Caroline, pray for love Caroline
Caroline, Caroline, down from above Caroline

She fell to her knees
She fell to her knees
And folded her hands to pray

She closed her eyes
She closed her eyes
But she didn_t know what to say

Caroline, Caroline, pray for love Caroline
Caroline, Caroline, down from above Caroline

God only knows
Who_s to blame
When the blameless hurt

She_s too young to know
She_s too young to know
She don'_t understand this pain

The world turns around
The world turns around
And nothing is ever the same

Caroline, Caroline, pray for love Caroline
Caroline, Caroline, down from above Caroline

God only knows
Who_s to blame
When the blameless hurt

I_m no poet and you_re no muse
We don_t even rhyme, we only confuse
I_m no poet and you_re no muse
So this is farewell, my Isabel

You_re no angel and I_m no saint
Our bows and arrows don_t even shoot straight
You_re no angel and I_m no saint
So this is farewell, my Isabel

So long Isabel
I wish you well

[Instrumental]

You_re just a gypsy and I_m just a clown
We fell for the moon on the water and drowned
You_re just a gypsy and I_m just a clown
So this is farewell

Now it_s all over
I_ve made up my mind
It_s for the better
If you go your way and I go mine

So long Isabel
I wish you well

I wish you well

MISSING CONNECTION (2.2) by Geoff Simpson

You in your anger and me, sounding so cavalier,
Pushing your buttons until Mr. Hyde would appear;
(When you?d) call me ?a loser? you?d lose more that your dignity:
(We?d) both lose a piece of the peace in our family.

MISSING CONNECTION; LASTING IMPRESSION.

How ?bout that Visitors Weekend when two feet of snow
buried your car like the secrets I don?t want to know.
Bound into spaces with twenty-four hours to spare,
Not ever mending the fences that needed repair.

MISSING CONNECTION; LASTING IMPRESSION.

Most of our actions denying the banners we wave
turning ?hypocrisy? into the word of the day.
Loving Thy Neighbor is hard in a home
(where) Honor Thy Father and Mother cuts to the bone

MISSING CONNECTION; LASTING IMPRESSION.

Stuck in it up to my lips; only love can resuscitate
what was left too little too late.

Now that you?re gone, I can?t hear your voice.
Now, if I wanted to call you, I don?t have the choice.
So many seasons of not seeing eye to eye;
I wish we still had the time... the time to try.

MISSING CONNECTION; LASTING IMPRESSION.

Stuck in it up to my lips; only love can resuscitate
what was left too little too late...
what was left too little too late.

The One
Words and Music by David Hanshaw C 2018

Sun comes up, the sun goes down
Shares its love with the ground
Rain will fall, and things will grow

Chorus:
I don_t want to be forgiven
I don_t want to be enough
I want to be The One you love

Moon makes it_s way across the sky
Tangled in her tail, she drags the tide
Life washes in and out in waves

Chorus:
I don_t want to be forgotten
I don_t want to rise above
I want to be The One you love

Bridge:
Love will lie in winter
It sleeps beneath the snow

Solo:

Chorus:
I don_t want to be forgiven
I don_t want to be enough
I want to be The One you love

Be the one
Be the one

Chorus:
I don_t want to be forgiven
I don_t want to be enough
I want to be The One you love

Let's go park in someone's driveway G C G
Turn the dash lights way down low C G Am D
Write Me plus You on foggy windows G C G
Hear our song on the radio C G Am D

Seemed like a dream, being seventeen Am G
Baby if we try, maybe we can be seventeen again F D G D

Let's hold hands for about an hour
In our favorite restaurant
I'll have a Coke, or a chocolate soda
And I'll buy you anything you want

Seemed like a dream, being seventeen
Baby if we try, maybe we can be seventeen again

We've got to keep the blues from winning Bm Am
Baby, let's try a new beginning C D

Let's get it right, just like the first time
Be the way we were back then
Let's fall in love, let's do it over
It'll be like seventeen again

Seemed like a dream, being seventeen
Baby if we try, baby we can be seventeen again

James (I Need Your Heartbeat)

FEBRUARY

Geoff Simpson

2019

James (I need your heartbeat) by Geoff Simpson

1) He stepped onto the platform with a borrowed folk guitar
To sing about the adolescent grieving
The shifting of the clouds revealed a shining from afar
a perfect metaphor for why he_s leaving
play us all another, comes a voice from in the night
Sing about the journey, sing about the strife.
THIS one isn_t finished, he felt he should explain,
about the day he started not believing.

2) Everyone around me never look a lot like me
I learned about the baby in the basket
Every simple answer to a question I_d receive
MADE me wonder WHERE else I should ASK it
Now I_m OFF to figure out from where it is I came
without the help of those who_ve given me their name
Drawn into a family, but longing to be free
My holy home fit tighter than a casket

CHORUS(a):
Where are my people where do I belong, I ask this question all night in my song
I need your VOICES, to be CLEAR and to be strong, & I need your heartbeat to help me along

3) Anyone who steps outside the shadow of the night
To contemplate the wisdom of the ages
Trying to identify the sources of the light
caught between the letters and the pages
& the Motion and the Rhythm, & the Color and the form
& the Melody making a way through the storm
Just another GLIMMER on this Journey out of Sight
FOR anyone for WHOm the battle rages

CHORUS(b):
WHERE ARE MY PEOPLE? WHERE DO I BEGIN Trying to figure this world that we_re in
I need your VOICES and I need your SONG and I need your HEART_BEAT to help me along

BRidge:
Barefoot and wandering all through the night through Oceans of soul bearing creatures
Guided by music and campfire light all searching for muses and teachers

CHORUS (a) & (b):
Where are my people where do I belong, I ask this question all night in my song
I need your VOICES, to be CLEAR & to be strong, & I need your heartbeat to help me along
WHERE ARE MY PEOPLE? WHERE DO I BEGIN Trying to figure this world that we_re in
I need your VOICES and I need your SONG and I need your HEART_BEAT to help me along

New Guitar

Saving my money keeping lights down low
Driving my car, I take it real slow
Puttin my pennies in a Mason jar
Saving for a New Guitar

Buyin my clothes at the re-sale store
Second hand shoes and so much more
Come the latest fashion of a rising star
Saving for a New Guitar

CHORUS: Oh I_m dreamin of the day I see UPS
Comin down the road to my address
It seems like forever, It seems so far
When you_re saving for a New Guitar

Corn bread and beans is my new cuisine
Eatin mustard greens, keepin it lean
Countin my blessings underneath the stars
Saving for a New Guitar

I_ve been keepin it warm by the fire glow
Sold the TV, now its radio
Scannin up and down the dial sittin in the car
Dreaming of a New Guitar

CHORUS: You know I_m dreamin of the day I see UPS
Comin down the road to my address
It seems like forever, It seems so far
When you_re saving for a New Guitar

Been missin dates with honey for a long, long time
No roses, no dinner, no warm red wine
My heart is breakin I can_t spare a dime
Saving for a New Guitar

CHORUS: Look a yonder comin its UPS
My heart is poundin I must confess
There_s no more money in the Mason jar
Cos I spent it on a New Guitar

OUTRO: There_s no more waitin on UPS
There_s nothing in the way of my success
I_m playin my songs at the local bar
Playin my New Guitar
They_re puttin money in the Mason jar
While I_m playin my New Guitar
Oh yes I am!
Good Night Babylon

MARCH

You gather all the treasure
That you can find
And nothing else could ever
Tame your pride

There_s one more sinner now
And one less saint
So fold your hands again and
Pretend to pray

Good night, Babylon

You taste an empty pleasure
Off the vine
As if to mock forever
One last time

There_s one more sinner now
And one less saint
So fold your hands again and
Pretend to pray

Good night, Babylon

There_s so many souls begging for mercy

Good night, Babylon

And now you fold your hands
And now you close your eyes
And now you say your prayers
For one last time
Oh, Babylon
Oh, Babylon
Good night

I_m here today with another letter
Hoping it will make me feel better
To keep your memory living
Is all that I can do
By coming here I feel like I_m reaching you

I can_t let go. No, I can_t let go
I can_t let go of the pain
I_m here at this black wall again
Touching your name
Touching your name

I remember evenings we read Huck
The time you brought down a six-point buck
The fence we put up that summer
As you grew into a man

I tore it down once I got the telegram

I can_t let go. No, I can_t let go
I can_t let go of the pain
I_m here at this black wall again
Touching your name

A handkerchief to give a polish
The gesture offers me some solace
My fingers linger on this granite wall
It_s better to have loved And lost you
Than never to have had you
At all

I can_t let go. No, I can_t let go
I can_t let go of the pain
I_m here at this black wall again
Touching your name
Touching your name

First Day of Tomorrow

Verse
Huddled halfway between Kansas and Nevada
Our lips were dry and getting by Was only getting harder
My mother sang at night Part folk song, part prayer
Buttermilk and sugar cane Sometimes I'm still there

Chorus
When rain washes out Your dusty tears of sorrow
The last day of yesterday Is the first day of tomorrow
The future is yours Not to steal, or beg and borrow
The last day of yesterday Is the first day of tomorrow

Verse
Like statues carved in rock By drought and deprivation
Tooth and nail we did prevail The dustbowl generation
We're gone but our songs Still speak to today
America may stumble But we will find a way

Chorus
When rain washes out Your dusty tears of sorrow
The last day of yesterday Is the first day of tomorrow
The future is yours Not to steal, or beg and borrow
The last day of yesterday Is the first day of tomorrow

MOUNTAIN FEVER
WORDS AND MUSIC: DAVID HANSHAW ©2019

WOKE UP IN TEARS, THIS MORNING
WITH A HURTFUL FEELING DEEP IN MY CHEST
TRYING HARD NOT TO REMEMBER
THAT DREADFUL DAY SHE LEFT

THE DAY MY BABY SAID SHE HAD THAT MOUNTAIN FEVER
I JUST THOUGHT SHE WAS COMIN DOWN WITH A COLD
THEN I HEARD THE CRACK OF A SCREEN DOOR SLAMMIN
SAW THAT DUST SHE WAS RIPPIN OFF THE ROAD

SOLO - MANDOLIN

IF YOUR BABY SAYS SHE_S GOT THAT MOUNTAIN FEVER
HOLD HER TIGHT AND BOLT THOSE CABIN DOORS
IF SHE ANSWERS TO THAT WILD ONE CALLIN
BOY YOU_LL NEVER SEE HER NO MORE

JUST LIKE THE DAY MY BABY SAID SHE HAD MOUNTAIN FEVER
AND I JUST THOUGHT SHE WAS COMIN DOWN WITH A COLD
THEN I HEARD THE CRACK OF A SCREEN DOOR SLAMMIN
SAW THE DUST SHE WAS RIPPIN OFF THE ROAD

Shame on You
Melanie Broussard, Buddy Trotter & Danny Liggett

V1
I never wanted to cry a river
About anyone or anything
You hurt me so bad
With your little fling
Now, hell hath no fury
Like a woman scorned
You will regret the day
You were ever born

Chorus
Shame, shame, shame on you
Oh, the pain you put me through
Shame, shame
Now we_re through
Shame on you

V2
Then I followed you
To that sleazy hotel
Where there is certainly no
Kiss and tell

Your sneaking around
Didn_t fool me at all
I saw the handwriting
on the wall

Chorus
Shame, shame, shame on you
Oh, the pain you put me through
Shame, shame
Now we_re through
Shame on you

Instrumental

V3
Don_t you dare walk down
My street anymore
Your key won_t work
In the lock on my door, no
You don_t have to pay
Them dry cleaning bills
I gave all your clothes
To Goodwill

Chorus
Shame, shame, shame on you
Feel the pain you put me through
Shame, shame
Now we_re through
Shame on you

DUST

W & M by Joan Kennedy & Ron Tintner ©2019, ASCAP

[Inspired by the photo, "Migrant Mother," by Dorothea Lange, 1936]

One in the oven, one on your lap
Crying like a fire alarm
Two in the field, two on the pallet
One hanging off of each arm

Rain cloud blowing right on past
Wind blowing hot and dry
Your breath blowing tired and slow
Dust blowing into your eyes

CHORUS:
Dust in your eyes, dust in your mouth
Dust in the cracks of your skin
Dust in the water, dust in the food
Dust in the bottle of your old man_s gin

And the baby wakes up choking
And he_s peed right through his clothes
Staring straight ahead you clear
The dust from his mouth and his nose

CHORUS

BRIDGE:
Nothing but dust, nothing to see
Nowhere to go, nowhere to be

Your man_s late getting back from town
And you wonder if he_s all right
Til you finally feel him stumble down
Beside you in the night

CHORUS
I Think She Knows

2019

Last night I. Went out by myself.

She and I just weren't right, I needed time to feel. Alone.

That's when I, drunk and by myself.

Lost my mind and threw it all away on someone else.

And now I can't say. I have to keep it to myself.

I'm ashamed, I'd never risk it all.

Now the guilt I feel is hell.

And I think she knows.

And the silence drives me crazy.

I think she knows. And now all that I can do is serve my time.

Day by day. We work to make it through. It's better now that time has passed, I'm cautious what I choose.

Still I wonder why. A single night I can't undo.

I'm just thankful for the love I have and the words she's never used.

Cos I think she knows. And her eyes sometimes remind me.

But I'm grateful that we made it.

I think she knows

I think she knows

I think she knows.

I HEARD YOU WERE THE ONE FROM LONG AGO
SOME SAY YOU ARE THE ONE THAT I NEED TO KNOW
THE POWER OF THE TRUTH IN YOUR STORY THEY_VE TOLD
IS A SAVER OF SOULS

I HEARD THE PEELING BELLS AND THE LAUGHTER IN THE STREET
I READ ABOUT YOUR DEEDS AND THE WASHING OF THEIR FEET
I CELEBRATED ON THE BIRTH OF YOUR CREED
AND THE LOSS OF YOUR LIFE

WILL I KNOW THE WAY TO FIND YOU
WILL I KNOW THE LOVE THAT_S IN YOUR HEART
WILL YOU SHOW THE WAY TO FIND YOU
AT LEAST WHERE TO START

DROPPED COIN INTO A PLATE AND PASSED AROUND MY PAIN
STOOD BENEATH THEIR ROOF SOAKING WET FROM THE RAIN
MY FRIENDS SAY I_M A FOOL, THEY ASK WHAT LOVE HAVE I GAINED
WHAT LOVE IN YOUR EYES

I KNELT AT MOTHER_S STONE WITH TEARS ON MY FACE
I STRUGGLED WITH THE GRIEF, LONGING FOR GRACE
SACRIFICE AND LOSS HAS BROUGHT ME TO THIS PLACE
IN SEARCH OF YOU

I STILL DON_T KNOW THE WAY TO FIND YOU
WHY WON_T YOU TAKE THE PAIN THAT_S IN MY HEART
LORD PLEASE SHOW THE WAY TO FIND YOU
AT LEAST WHERE TO START
